GB Construction Shropshire Limited

From Uncertainty to Clarity — Supporting Growth Beyond the Build

Introduction to our client

GB Construction Shropshire Limited is a specialist builder well known for the quality of workmanship crafting high-end oak timber frame properties and other high-value projects, often over £1 million, delivered with real attention to detail. It is the attention to detail and quality of build which generates new business – the work speaks for itself!  While the business was thriving on-site, behind the scenes it was a different story, being out on site all day managing projects the last thing the client wanted to do was come in and deal with paperwork.

Our work with them and services supplied

The client was previously relying on a bookkeeper but couldn’t tell how much of the money in the bank was actually his. There was no real visibility over the business’s finances.  Paperwork would be dropped off then the client would wait inconsistently for updates, and most of the critical information lived in someone else’s system — not theirs. The only updates he’d get were how much VAT was due being refunded. Whilst he had an idea how much money he should be making and where the margins should be there was no information received as to if the actual financials were delivering that.

We began by getting the accounts up to date and helping him get a clear picture of where the business really stood. Then we sat down and walked through the numbers in detail — explaining what it all meant and showing how he could draw funds in a more tax-efficient way, while also thinking longer-term about building wealth for his family.

We also sat down with him to go through his accounts in detail, explaining how he could draw money more tax-efficiently and structure things to build personal wealth. That included tax planning, advising him to set up a pension, and the creation of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to hold land for future builds, protecting the trading company and streamlining development work.

Importantly, we brought deep construction-specific knowledge — from the nuances of CIS to handling VAT on new builds, conversions, and reverse charge rules. That level of expertise helped the client feel confident that he was operating compliantly, without hidden risks from HMRC.

The clients opinion on our work

Spotlight are the only accountants that have sat and listened to the challenges that I’m facing. I know my accounts and tax are looked after — but more importantly, they provide a really important sounding board when running a business. Sometimes you just need someone to sanity-check your decisions especially when you are running a business on your own.

The clients review

Previous accountants I worked with always seemed focused on just keeping me in check with HMRC. There were no conversations about how to structure my business or my income in a smarter, more tax-efficient way — just the basics and nothing more.

That changed from day one with Spotlight.

As soon as they looked at my books, they recommended incorporating into a limited company, which immediately saved me tax. It wasn’t just a numbers exercise — they took the time to understand both my business and my personal goals, and they’ve backed it up ever since with solid, professional advice.

They sit, they listen, and they get it.

Every time I’ve needed guidance or a referral to someone who can help with the next challenge, it’s been spot on. And the people they work with carry the same reliable, professional, can-do approach  that consistency means a lot.

They’re always at the end of the phone whenever I have a query or concern, and I never feel like I’m just another client on the list.

Using Spotlight gives me confidence that my accounts and tax are handled properly — and always with my best interests in mind, not just what HMRC wants to see.

How we can help your business

If you’re running a growing construction business and finding it hard to keep track of your numbers, Spotlight can help bring clarity, control, and confidence to your finances.

We’ve worked with specialist builders like GB Construction , who came to us after feeling let down by previous professionals. Their accounts were left disorganised, they had no real-time access to figures, and most of the financial information lived in someone else’s system — leaving them in the dark about cash flow, profitability, and what money was actually theirs.

Here’s what we did, and how we can help you too:

✅ Structure your business smartly
We assess how your business is set up and, if needed, help you incorporate in a more tax-efficient way — saving money from the start.

✅ Move you onto Xero and Dext
You’ll get full visibility over your business finances. Raise invoices, track what’s owed, and see your supplier payments — all in real time.

✅ Weekly bookkeeping with real-time insights
No more guessing. You’ll know what profit you’re making, how projects are performing, and whether your margins are healthy.

✅ Navigate construction-specific rules
From CIS to VAT on new builds, conversions, and reverse charge — we understand the details that matter to builders and developers, helping you stay compliant and avoid costly errors.

✅ Be your trusted sounding board
Whether you’re buying land, planning a new build, or managing cash flow on big projects, we’ll be there with you — not just for the numbers, but for the decisions that come with them.

✅ Access to a trusted network
When a challenge comes up, we’ll connect you with other reliable professionals who share our high standards and can-do approach.

✅ We’ve been in your shoes
This isn’t just textbook accounting. One of our directors is actively involved in the construction industry themselves — so we understand the reality on-site as well as what’s needed behind the scenes. That lived experience gives us a deeper perspective and means we offer advice that’s grounded in both the practical and the professional.

Spotlight isn’t just about ticking HMRC’s boxes. We take the time to understand your business, offer practical advice, and make sure everything we do keeps your best interests front and centre.

If you’re ready to stop firefighting and start building with confidence, we’re ready to help.
