Let’s start with a story.
RJW Metalworks came to us after working with a bookkeeper who, quite frankly, didn’t get their business. The complexities of CIS? Missed. Understanding what money was owed to them, what was due to HMRC, what was sitting with suppliers? Nowhere to be found.
They were running a business with blind spots. No dashboard. No headlights. Just guesswork and crossed fingers.
Now? They get a clear picture every month. And as one of the directors told us,
“We wouldn’t have grown as much as we have without Spotlight — they give us the confidence to make the decisions in the numbers they produce.”
We love working with clients like that — growth-minded, curious, and committed to understanding their numbers.
But we’ll be honest. We’re not the right fit for everyone.
And that’s okay. Here are a few reasons why you might not want to work with us.
- You just want someone cheap to “do the books”
If you’re looking for someone to guess what your receipts mean, throw together a tax return, and tell you what you owe — without asking any questions — we’re not it.
We take time to get the data right. Because understanding your tax bill starts with understanding your business. And when you know what drives your profits, expenses, and growth… You stop reacting and start leading.
- You’re not prepared to change how you share your information
Uploading a quarter’s worth of bank statements the week before the deadline? No thanks.
We ask our clients to keep things up-to-date. That way, when you’re wondering if you can afford a new van, take a dividend, or invest in a property — we can answer quickly and confidently, using real numbers.
If that sounds like too much work, we might not be the best match.
- You don’t want to understand your financials
Some people don’t want to know how their business is doing.
They want to avoid the details, let someone else “handle it,” and cross their fingers come tax time.
That’s not how we work.
We’ll sit with you. Translate the numbers. Help you see what they mean for your business, your family, and your future. But we need you in the seat beside us, not hiding behind the wheel.
- You want instant answers to complicated questions
“Can I have a company car?”
“Should I make a pension contribution?”
“Will this save me tax?”
It depends.
We’ll always give you an answer that’s tailored to you, not a stock response. But that means asking a few more questions, checking the data, and making sure the decision fits into the bigger picture.
You wouldn’t buy a van for £30,000 just to save £7,500 in tax… unless Joe from the pub told you to. Which leads us nicely to…
- You listen to Joe from the pub more than your accountant
We give you advice based on qualifications, experience, and actual business strategy.
If you prefer to trust your mate at the bar over the roadmap we’ve laid out — we’re not the right sat nav for you.
We’re not offended. But we are direct.
- You don’t care whether your accountant is qualified
Did you know “accountant” isn’t a protected word?
Anyone can call themselves one.
We’re ICAEW regulated (and soon to be ACCA too). That means our team is trained, technically competent, and held to professional standards. We can’t always compete on price — but we do compete on quality, clarity, and care.
- You want to drop off a bag of receipts and call it done
We charge more for that, because it costs us more — time, clarity, and quality.
Our ideal clients upload invoices as they go, which helps us give real-time advice that actually means something.
If you’re happy with a service that keeps the lights on but never asks why you’re driving in the dark — that’s okay. But we’re not that service.
It’s about fit — not judgment
There are businesses that want fast, cheap, and hands-off. That’s valid.
But our clients want partnership. They want perspective. They want to know their numbers, not just what they owe.
So if you’re stuck with an accountant who spits out a tax bill and sends you on your way, and you’re wondering if there’s a better way — there is.

We’ll help you understand what your business is really saying.
