It’s easy to think, “It’s just a £5 interest, does it even matter?”
But when it comes to your tax return — yes, it really does. That £5 of bank interest, no matter how small, could be the start of a much bigger conversation with HMRC if it’s missing from your return.
Here’s why.
HMRC Already Has the Information
Banks report taxable interest (excluding ISAs) directly to HMRC.
So if it’s not on your tax return, their systems will likely notice. And when they do, you might receive something called an aspect inquiry.
This is a formal request asking why there’s a mismatch. It might be a simple fix — or it could be the start of a more stressful process.
From Small Oversight to Full Inquiry
We’ve seen first-hand how fast this can escalate.
Recently, we helped a client resolve an HMRC investigation involving £6 million in dividend income. The right amount had been correctly declared, but automated systems flagged it as missing due to discrepancies and duplications in third-party reporting.
Even though the issue was resolved, it caused months of stress and unnecessary worry.
What Counts and Why It Matters
It is not just bank interest other income reported to HMRC includes:
- All employments – yes including the one where you earnt less than £50
- Rental income – HMRC are matching land registry data
…all income must be included if it’s taxable.
If HMRC sees income that has been declared to them but isn’t reflected in your return, it assumes something’s been left out. That’s when the letters arrive.
What You Can Do Now
- Check your bank interest (not ISAs) for the year
- Download or request the interest certificate — even if it’s small
- Let us know if you’ve had income from older accounts or business savings
- Provide details of all income sources – we are not doing it for kicks
It may feel like overkill, but it’s exactly this level of detail that keeps your tax return accurate, compliant, and unproblematic.
And that’s what we’re here to help with.
