The £25,000 Mistake You Can Avoid

When we met a lovely client recently, she shared something that stayed with us. Her husband had sadly passed away before they got around to adding his name to the property deed. It felt like one of those small admin things you’ll sort eventually — until it’s too late.

Because of that one missing detail, she now faces a £25,000 inheritance tax bill that could have been avoided. Unless she spends down her estate or restructures her affairs, the taxman will get more than his fair share.

This isn’t a scare story. It’s real, and it’s more common than you think.
Let’s discuss the Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB).

What is the Residence Nil Rate Band?

The RNRB is an extra tax-free allowance on top of the standard Inheritance Tax (IHT) threshold (£325,000). It can give you up to £175,000 extra per person, as long as you leave your home to direct descendants.

That means a couple could potentially pass on £1 million tax-free (£325,000 + £175,000 each).

But the rules are strict. You must:

  • Own a home or a share in one when you die
  • Leave it to direct descendants (children, grandchildren, stepchildren, etc.)
  • Have an estate worth under £2 million — above this, the allowance is reduced

Why It Matters

Inheritance tax planning isn’t about being morbid. It’s about protecting the people you love.

Our client’s story is a painful reminder that these details matter. If her husband had been added to the deed, they could have claimed the full combined allowance. Now, despite doing everything else right, she’s left with a bill that could have gone to her children instead.

We’re not sharing this to scare you. We’re sharing it because these conversations are too important to put off.

Don’t Leave It Until It’s Too Late

It’s easy to think, “We’ll sort that next year,” or “It’ll be fine.” But no one knows when their time is up. And getting proper advice now could make a huge difference to your family later.

Get in touch if you want to understand your position. There may be options to restructure things now, and even if not, we can at least give you clarity.
Because peace of mind is worth it.
